22nd February 09 was a day that the warriors were looking to end on a high note before we begin our deserved 2-week break. We were top of the table and were looking forward to face the Vipers.

We started the game fast and settled into the tempo well. Within a few minutes, we were one up on the Vipers. A loose clearance by their defender was intercepted by Shahril whose pass was met by the on-coming Alif who let fly a left-footed shot that had their keeper beaten. But instead of capitalizing, we gave the Vipers time to settle and dictate the pace of the game. They were very organized, fast and looked more “hungry” to win the game. Slowly they managed to equalize. A cross from the left was met by a header which gave Redza little chance.

We went for goal again. Faizal managed to break down the left wing and put in a good cross which was spectacularly volleyed and finished off by Alif. Soon enough, we were caught sleeping again. A quick freekick was taken by them to their left-winger who controlled the ball and some-how managed to lob the ball passed Redza and into the top corner. The score was 2-2.

Just when we thought that we were settling in, the Vipers hit and bit us again. A high ball in our half was not dealt with swiftly which resulted in their striker with the chance to lob the ball over our helpless custodian. The warriors were yet to throw in the towel. A moment of brilliance by our capi-tan, Fahmie, managed to level the game again. He “drove” through their defence with sheer tenacity and released a shot that rifled through their net. It was an end-to-end first half which ended with a 3-3 scoreline.

However, the 2nd half did not go in the way of the warriors. The killer blow was when a cross from the right was unfortunately met by a header by Doc and into our own goal. The Vipers were very obliging with the gift presented and they tried the very best to “waste” any time possible to further frustrate us. We pushed on and perhaps the anxiety got the better of our players. Things were not going our way. We were not able to break down their defence which was greatly marshaled by their centre-backs.

The game ended with our first loss of the season. It was just not our day and we were humbled and taught a hard-lesson by the Vipers.

The team had a good team-talk after the game. We believe that we should not lower our heads but instead to strive on. We shall make a comeback!
