Al-Caliph started the new campaign with a 1-1 draw with returning participant, FC Sharks. It was a different team from the one we met in the first season at Queensway Sec Sch. They were organise and quick to the ball.
We gave the opponent too much respect in the first half. Too many spaces were given, passes were astray and support was lacking. Nervousness was an issue also as the team was made up of new players. It took some time for the team to click. Fitness was telling and some senior players were caught rough on the edges due to long layoff. At the end of the first half, we were down 0-1.
We were by no means without our chances. We had it aplenty. We were able to pick their defence. We just need a little bit of luck. This was told to the team. We have to carry on push the opponent.
In the second half, the team came out blazing. We were winning most first balls and closing opponent down. Again we had plenty of chances but we couldnt find the net. Yet no heads were lowered. The team pushed on and found the equaliser. That was an impetus to go for the win but alas, lady luck was not smiling.
Overall, it was a good start considering that we had new players. Getting accustomed to the tournament standard is a culture shock to some and will take time. However, the team adapted quickly with constant push and motivation from all.
Considering, the debacle of last year's first game, this was a good result. Like the opponent's coach said, "Great comeback!". Yes it was.
